"...Nested circles were fixtures of petroglyphs, cylinder seals, mandalas, and alchemical manuscripts long before they were taken up by modernists such as Wassily Kandinsky, Robert and Sonia Delaunay, Kenneth Noland, Bridget Riley, and Frank Stella. Lu’s aims with this perennial motif seem neither strictly mystical nor optical; rather, they point toward the mathematics of music. Circumnavigating the exhibition I felt as if I’d been initiated into the music of the spheres or the circle of fifths: an ordered, immaculate universe light-years away from the quotidian."
